The creator of the Interlagos Circuit was Louis Romero Sanson. To plan the track, engineer Sanson made a detailed study of other racetracks of his time, such as Brooklands, England; Tripoli, Italy; Roosevelt Raceway and Indianapolis, in the United States and Monthony, in France. Taking advantage of each other's innovations, he designed a high-speed track for Interlagos. The original project also contained plans for bleachers on both sides of the track, a stadium for international competitions and a parking lot.
The construction of the race track was surrounded by great expectations. In April 1939, at the race track under construction, a group of drivers led by Manoel de Teffé, took the first laps of the track. The São Paulo population still had to wait another year for the grand opening, postponed on two occasions in November of that year.
Finally, on May 12, 1940, 15 thousand people watched the São Paulo Grand Prix, won by Arthur Nascimento Júnior, who covered the 25 laps of the race in 1 hour, 46 minutes and 44 seconds. He was driving a 3,500 cc Alfa Romeo. Second place was Francisco Landi (Chico Landi), with a 3,000 cc Maserati; Geraldo Avelar, with another Alfa Romeo, came in third.
The second world war (1939-1945) forced Brazil to ration fuel, cooling the spirits of motorists, who used little Interlagos. The resumption of activities at the Autódromo took place in preparation for the celebrations of the 4th Centenary of the city of São Paulo. In 1956, the first edition of the most traditional Brazilian motor racing event took place: the Mil Milhas de Interlagos.
The first major reform of the race track took place in 1969. At the reopening in February 1970, a test of the international Formula Ford championship was held, won by young Émerson Fittipaldi. In 1971 Interlagos underwent a new renovation and hosted, for the first time, a Formula 1 GP, held in 1972. The winner of the race, which was not worth points for the championship and served to approve the circuit, was the Argentine Carlos Reutemann.
The following year, the Brazilian people celebrated the first victory of a Brazilian in F1 at Interlagos, with Émerson Fittipaldi, who repeated the feat in 1974. In 1975, José Carlos Pace, the driver who gives the name to the Autodrome, won his only race in the category. Ayrton Senna won at Interlagos in the 91 and 93 GPs. Of the great Brazilian drivers who went through F1, only Nelson Piquet did not win at Interlagos.
From 1981 to 1989 the GP Brasil was held in Rio de Janeiro. In 1990, after undergoing a major renovation, which included reducing the circuit from 7,823 to 4292 meters, Interlagos once again hosted the event. In 2001, the winner of the GP was the German Michael Schumacher.
In addition to Formula 1, Interlagos receives evidence of regional championships, the Stock Car, Formula Truck, Formula Ford, Formula 3 and motovelocidade, among others.
Mandatory stop
The first winner of a race at Interlagos was a motorcyclist, Hans Ravache.
Until 1950, the race track belonged to the company Auto-Estrada, which was in crisis. That year, Interlagos was sold to the Commission that organized the 4th Centenary of the city of São Paulo, for 23 cruzeiros per m2, well below the real value, which was 300 cruzeiros per m2.
After the 4th Centenary celebrations, the race track was incorporated into the city's public heritage.
The biggest winner of the Brazilian GP of Formula 1, in Interlagos, is the German Michael Schumacher, with three victories (1994, 95 and 2000) in 20 editions.
Brazil is the country that most won F1 GPs in Interlagos: five times (twice with Senna, twice with Émerson and once with Pace). Behind are Germany, with three victories, all with Schumacher, and France, with the victories of Jacques Laffite, in 79, René Arnoux, in 80, and Alan Prost, in 1990.
In addition to the radio, the flags are another form of communication between the race director and the Formula 1 drivers. There are several inspectors scattered throughout the course with flags to signal accidents, oil on the track, slower cars entering or indicate to latecomers that they need to make way for the fastest. Each driver will also have the indication of these flags in the car's cockpit through an electronic system that uses GPS.
See below the flags used in the Formula 1 events:
The yellow flag is an indication to the driver of danger on the track as a car stopped in a dangerous location or an object on the track. If there is only one flag, the intention is to warn the pilot. If there are two flags, the driver should pay more attention and be prepared to greatly reduce the speed on the stretch. Overtaking is prohibited where the yellow flag is.
Blue Flag
The blue flag is used to indicate to latecomers that a car is faster than it is behind and must be allowed to overtake. If the same driver is alerted three times with the flag, he may be punished by the direction of the event, if he does not allow the best placed driver to pass.
White flag
The white flag shows the driver that a slower car is on the track. It can be an ambulance, safety car or even a tow truck for the removal of single seats involved in accidents.
Black flag
This is the flag that no pilot wants to receive. It is accompanied by the driver's number and shows that he must return to the pit, as he was disqualified from the race due to some irregularity.
Green Flag
The green flag indicates that the hazards shown with other flags signaled in previous sections are over. Therefore, riders can accelerate normally again.
Black banner with orange circle
Accompanied by the driver's number, the black flag with an orange circle indicates that the car has a mechanical problem and needs to go to the pit.
Diagonal black and white flag
The white and black flag, divided diagonally, is accompanied by the car number and warns the driver of his unsportsmanlike conduct on the track. If the direction of the race considers that he has not changed this posture, the pilot may be disqualified with the black flag.
Black and white checkered flag
In the race, this is the flag shown for the first time to the driver who wins the GP. Then it is given to pilots who cross after the winner. In training, the checkered flag indicates the end of the session, and drivers who cross before it can end their lap and it will be counted for classification purposes.
Safety car plate
Indicates the entry of the Safety Car on the track. It is only shown next to the yellow flag.
